We are living in the modernistic world and we are moving ahead each day. In terms of technology, socially and et al., if we look at the growth in the women’s position in the society, we should be proud that it has been remarkable! They are flying planes, taking over companies and walking with us shoulder to shoulder. But there is one thing which hasn’t changed much, ‘Women’s position in sports’.
It is shameful to know that our society, in fact not just our Indian society, but the entire world still believes that women are physically weak. This is the world of Gender Discrimination. To start with, the major issue in the field of sports is its MALE DOMINANCE. Most of the sports are considered to be fit for Men, even if women participate in them; they aren’t given the importance and respect they deserve. People have this stereotypical thinking in their mind that a woman cannot play cricket like a man, or she cannot do weightlifting like a man and et al. This is exactly where the problem lies.
GENDER BIASNESS IN SPORTS
They can’t stop themselves from comparing a woman with a man. Whatever she does, good or bad, they cannot resist themselves from making a comparison. Why does she have to be ‘like a man’; when she can be herself and give her best. Even if we have women sports team, no one cares about that or the matches they play. People consider it as a sheer waste of time. We all love cricket, but I bet most of the people out there wouldn’t even know the name of Indian Women’s Team’s captain; because they do not hold enough importance for their talent.
Bias in sports in terms of gender
It is disgraceful yet a fact that women are considered only fit for sports like Tennis, Volley Ball and Gymnastics. Another major issue of Gender biasness in the sports field is the ‘Media Coverage’. The media does not take any initiative to represent women’s achievements in sports; but they are the first ones to report about the scandals. They give less importance to Females teams in various sports, which might be the reason that most of the people are artless about Women Football, Basketball, Hockey teams and et al.
Sexual harassment is another issue faced by the female players. Often shameful comments are made on the Female players for their outfits, body and many other things which don’t really matter. Sometimes, the Female players are harassed by the faculty as well. Also, there is lack of women role models in the field of sports.
It’s not that, there aren’t great women sportspersons. But since there isn’t enough media coverage about them; they never come in the lime light. Aspiring female sportspersons don’t have anyone to look up to. This ends up with MALE SPORTSPERSONS being the ideal of many. Taking the example of the blockbuster movie ‘Chak De India’ which is a portrayal of the hardships faced by the Indian Women Hockey Team and their coach. They were humiliated by the faculty and considered an incapable bunch of women.
But they didn’t give up and with their hard work and determination; they won the world cup. The movie has set an example for a lot of people out there that if given the opportunity even women can compete with men at the same level. To conclude I’d like to say that if we are giving women a chance in each field and they are performing so well; then why not in this field as well. “WE WANT HER TO FLY, BUT AREN’T WE THE ONES HOLDING HER BACK”.
